The text begins with an extensive survey of arms race models, from the classic Richardson model to models exploring the effects of factors such as the domestic and international economic environment, public opinion and party politics, and weapons technology and information by: Introduction Models of the arms race process are among the most extensively tested mathematical models in the social sciences.

This is not surprising given their obvious theoretical and mathematical elegance, and the relative ease with which they lend themselves to quantitative analysis. Models of arms race by Jayantanuja Bandyopadhyaya, Jadavpur University.

Despite this proliferation, there are some fundamental methodological problems associated with Richardson-type models and the arms race modeling enterprise in general that have not been adequately addressed.
With such simplification, arms races are studied by means of reaction curves that indicate optimal weapons stocks, given the weapons stocks of the opponent. The ratio goal and Richardson models are formulated in terms of reaction curves.
Allowance is made for the neglect of strategy and constraints by these models. the fieldnote in [3 ], “The Richardson arms race model constitutes one of the most impor-tant models of arms race phenomena and, at the same time, one of the most influentia formal models in all of the international relations literature.” Arms races are not limited to the interaction of.
ments, the next arms race will be run by a much larger number of contestants—with highly destructive stra-tegic capabilities far more closely matched and capable of being quickly enlarged than in any other previous period in history.
Arms race models There is an extensive body of theoretical and empirical literature on arms race modeling. These include game-theoretic models based on the “prisoner’s dilemma” (PD), dynamic mathematical models based on the Richardson model, and economic models frequently based on a “utility-maximizing” framework.
Surprisingly, despite a long history of formal models of arms races, the models we have Models of arms race book the literature lack one or more these features – no choices (Richardson Models of arms race book, no option to use the weapons (Prisoners’ Dilemma models), or no accumulation of arms over multiple periods (PowellJackson and Morelli ).
An arms race, such as the U.S.-Soviet Cold War nuclear arms race, occurs when countries increase their military forces to gain superiority over one another. focus of this chapter, is the Richardson model of the arms race as an action-reaction process, represented by a pair of differential equations.
Just as the two supply and demand equations have. was a system of differential equations modelling arms races. This system has become known as the Richardson Arms Race Model, and has been subject to analysis and refinement since being published.
The basic system is: dx dt = ay −mx+r dy dt = bx−ny +s This system can be expanded to include any number of equations, each one representing a single country.
Arms Race is a book of twelve short stories by New Zealand-born author and artist, Nic Low. The settings are as varied as the subject matter, although a few of the stories have common elements or themes that draw tenuous links between them.
Octopus, the first story, is set in New Zealand and feels like the first chapter of a longer work/5(18). the Richardson Arms Race Model David Bigelow. As mentioned earlier, we can extend this system to model more than 2 countries Consider a system of three countries X, Y and Z. X is quite aggressive and war-prone.
Y is neutral and rather passive. Z is a foe of nation X. Since Lewis F. Richardson's seminal contribution in arms race modeling, there has been a proliferation of arms race models in journals and books across many disciplines.

In the s, U.S. President Ronald Reagan revived cold-war policies and rhetoric, referring to the Soviet Union as the "evil empire" and escalating the nuclear arms race; some have argued this stance was responsible for the eventual collapse of Soviet Communism while others attribute its downfall to the inherent weakness of the Soviet state.

Nic Low’s stories go beyond satire, aiming for the dark heart of our collective obsession with technology, power and variously in London, an Indian village.
The Arms Race provides a rare opportunity for coaches, parents and players to learn from a Who’s Who of experts when it comes to pitching. These pros provide their insights on the state of pitching today and into the future.
If you’re looking for a detailed dive into pitching mechanics, this is NOT the book for you but if you’re Reviews: Richardson's simple arms race model inspired an extensive (and still growing) body of research by scholars in many disciplines.
Unfortunately, much of this work follows Richardson's lead by paying Richardson, Rationality, and Restrictive Models of Arms Races.
The Arms Race in Asia concludes that if the emerging arms race is left unchecked, it is likely that Asia will increasingly become a region of instability, marked by conflicts and interstate wars. The book will be of great interest to students of Asian politics, strategic studies, defence studies, security studies and IR in general.
This chapter discusses a dynamic heuristic game theory model of an arms race. Models of the arms race are typically based on the Richardson model or on rational choice models.
This chapter reviews the Richardson arms race model: a pair of differential equations which capture an action reaction process. Whereas many of Richardson’s equations were quite specific about what they referred to, the arms race model was not.

Three models of a three-nation arms race are presented: an all-against-all model, a model in which two nations are allied against the third, and a model in which one of the nations has a secret alliance with the other two. In the all-against-all situation, the model predicts an infinitely explosive arms race as each country fears an alliance of the other two.
Mathematical model could clarify arms race. Most countries reduced their stock of armaments during the 'new world order' period between. This review article is an attempt to analyze the econometric approach to the question of mathematical arms race models.
It tries to show that the major contributions of this perspective are its. In a recent paper, Brodie and Brodie provide a very detailed description of advances and counter-measures among predator–prey communities with a poisonous prey that closely parallel an arms race in modern society. In this work, we provide a mathematical model and simulations that provide a theory as to how this might work.
For most of the twentieth century, social scientists have attempted to understand the causes of military competition. From this struggle has evolved the Richardson Tradition of Arms Race Analysis, a distinct body of scientific literature that uses a variety of mathematical techniques and theoretical ideas to solve the puzzle of what drives military interaction among nations. An “arms race” is a competition over the quality or quantity of military capabilities between states in the international system.
The arms race phenomenon has received considerable attention from scholars over many decades because of the ubiquity, throughout history, of states building arms as a means of deterring enemies, but disagreement persists over whether that policy is effective at.The first book of its kind to provide a global perspective of the arms race, this two-volume work connects episodes worldwide involving nuclear weapons in a comprehensive, narrative fashion.
